Opus 45 (2023) — Timing: 38'
derived from a Wind Chimes in the Wild field recording

Basic details

This recording taking place
  • Instrumentation — Wind chimes as follows:

    • Music of the Spheres Gypsy Chimes, Mezzo and Soprano (tuned to different modes on an East European Gypsy scale)
    • Woodstock Chimes of Pluto (fairly high-pitched, tuned to pentatonic scale)
    • Original recording location / date  — just a little upstream of the Teign Gorge, on bank of River Teign, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK, on 5 March 2013.

    • Processing (a) speed reduced to half, so lowering pitch by an octave; (b) application of a cathedral acoustic with a moderate 'back of cathedral' perspective.

    • Primary distinguishing features — A great contrast after the visionary intensity of Nature-Symphonies 11 and 12. This is lean and simple, with no layering and relatively little chimes activity, the generally more or less distant birds becoming an important element during chimes quiescence. A very wistful springtime impression, as though somebody's still craving for autumn! That's the normal effect of that particular chimes combination when no other musical sounds are added to complicate the situation.

Note, however, that, as in all my Nature-Symphonies so far, I did not aim for or contrive any specific sound or effect. So far all titles have been arrived at once the work was completed. However, I do have a few titles awaiting relevant future works.
