  • The short works extracted from major works — I list these here for the sake of completeness, but the Publisher, with my agreement, decided for business reasons to withhold them from their catalogue until the parent major works have gained more public attention.

  • The works listed below that are not in the Publisher's list — Unless somebody comes forward to do the very major work of producing scores from my MIDI files of those works, they will become lost. I have other priorities in my life now, and so, for the foreseeable future, music work will have no further part in my life, apart from my being willing to give a small amount of guidance to anyone who takes on that score-production task. Please contact me if you are interested in taking on that task, or/and would like to publish any or all of the so-far unpublished works.

Notes

  • Trumpets. In general trumpets can be either Bb or C, but in some works there are the odd phrases that reach top D. For those a C trumpet is indicated.

  • Piccolo, Cor Anglais & Bass Clarinet. These do require separate players and cannot be doubled with 2nd Flute, Oboe or Clarinet respectively.

  • In all works, 'Cymbals' means both held and suspended ones.

  • Double choirs. Where '2 x SATB' is indicated, the two choirs are required to be segregated and well spread laterally if at all possible, for antiphonal effects, with the following arrangement: S1-A1-T1-B1-B2-T2-A2-S2.

  • Occasionally a detail of the instrumentation may be amended as I produce the score of a particular work. Any such changes are normally made only to enhance playability of the work.

Pre-recorded: Tubular bell sounds supplied by the Publisher on CD; this ensures that the intended sounds are used. This requires a musician and not just a technician to operate the CD player, because there are nine places in the score where the operator must press 'Pause' where marked in the score, immediately advancing the track number, then pressing 'Pause' again to restart play exactly on cue.
Or:
Keyboard: Wide range electronic / MIDI keyboard (at least 3 octaves either way from Middle C) configured with quality tubular bell sound playable through the whole range. The samples must be unlooped and the sound must be undamped, with a long release period set (about 50 seconds works).
Ideally the keyboard range would be panned across the soundstage, with the lowest notes to the left. The keyboard must be connected to a stereo speaker system that is of high enough quality to reproduce well the low frequencies and powerful feel of the lowest notes.

Notes:

1. Originally a standard orchestral tuba was specified, but that was a mistake because the note range goes too high (up to top A). Belatedly, in 2022, the Composer woke up to his folly over this and specified a euphonium or tenor tuba instead.

2. The only recordings of the work sanctioned by the Composer would be of the tuba version — although he wouldn't seek to obstruct recording of the other arrangements if anyone really wished to produce those. The Composer's one stipulation is that the first commercial recording should be of the tuba version if sensibly possible.

Note:

  • It is essential that the Great division includes Cymbale or a similar high repeating mixture, and that the Positive or an additional manual has Nazard and Tierce or equivalent mutation ranks which can be coupled to the Great and to the Pedal, and must also have an 8' strings stop such as Gamba, with celeste option.
  • Although the work is composed to be playable upon a very modestly specified organ, in practice the length of the work does really require the greater variation of colour and dynamics that a larger organ could produce.
  • Performance of individual or selected movements is sanctioned where it isn't practical to perform the entire work, and in this case the issue of restricted sound palette and dynamics on a smaller organ would be less of a consideration.

A CD is available with the score, containing a recording of the Composer's MIDI rendition using his 'church bell' sound, but without the trumpets. With the right speaker system this sound could be more effective than the same sound sample played live by a keyboard, because some of the notes in the MIDI realization are actually lower than any normal keyboard can reach.

Electronic / MIDI keyboard with the range of a normal concert grand piano (ordinary domestic small range ones are insufficient), configured with a copy of the same 'church bell' sound that the Composer uses in his realizations. Other bell sounds may sound nice but wouldn't realize the Composer's intentions, and indeed some very nice bell sounds would actually give a discordant effect in this work. Ideally the keyboard range would be panned across the soundstage, with the lowest notes to the left — though in the soundfont provided by the publisher the panning has already been arranged.
The keyboard needs to be connected to a stereo speaker system that is of high enough quality to reproduce well the low frequencies and powerful feel of the lowest notes.
