Nature-Symphony 18
— Legend of the night and the day in the deep forest

Opus 50 (2023) — Timing: 47'
derived from a field recording of metal wind chimes, and another of a large bamboo chime

Basic details

A later recording in the same session taking place
The original metal chimes recording for this work taking place.
  • Instrumentation —  6 metal wind chimes (with some bird sounds), with a much more recent bamboo chime recording (in 3 layers) mixed-in.

  • Original field recording locations / dates — Metal chimes recording: just down from Hunting Gate, highest point of the Hunter's Path high up on north side of Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK, on 15 April 2014. Bamboo chime recording made on 15 November 2023 in edge of open copse on Piddledown, a little above the Hunter's Path, nearer Castle Drogo.
Listen to the original metal chimes recording to appreciate the subsequent transformation.

  • Processing — Four layers were used: one for the metal chimes (half-speed), and three for the solo large bamboo chime recording. In this case all the layers were at half-speed and thus an octave lower than the originals, but layers 3 and 4 were taken respectively a fifth and a major sixth lower still, without further speed reduction. I give some more specifics about the chimes used, and the subsequent processing, on my Freesound page for the work.

  • Primary distinguishing features — A dramatic and eruptive performance from the three layers of bamboo chime, with the metal chimes ensemble in the background periodically giving a sense of dramatic intensity and also often a restless peacefulness, as though always poised for the next intense moment.
