Nature-Symphony 53
Yon bright mountain calls from afar, its distance vast!

Opus 87 (2024)Timing: 61'
derived from field recording of metal wind chime trio and a pair of bamboo chimes

Basic details

A different recording in the same session — without the Gypsy chime
This recording taking place, not all the chimes being clearly visible in this view.

  • Instrumentation — Part of field recording of a particularly potent sextet of metal wind chimes, with two short clips from an earlier bamboo chimes recording.

  • Original field recording location / date: 18 February 2013 (https://freesound.org/people/Philip_Goddard/sounds/700528/), at Hunter's Tor, near the Hunter's Path and Castle Drogo, Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK.

    • Processing and deployment: Three layers were used, with different speed / pitch reductions, and different degrees of cathedral acoustic. Layer 1 was simply a somewhat longer version of Nature-Symphony 1 (The Inner Fire wistfully seeking to define itself).

For fuller details please see the Freesound page for this work.

    • Distinguishing features — Like the last three Nature-Symphonies, the density and complexity of the sound is suggestive of complex mountain terrain, though here we have much more sweetness of sound. Layer 1 frequently shines out like the distant mountain of the title.
