Basic details

Original recording taking place
Original recording taking place
  • Instrumentation — Wind chimes as follows:

    • Music of the Spheres Gypsy Mezzo Chimes

    • Bamboo chimes, large and small sets (cheap local purchase)
  • Original recording location / date — In the edge of open woodland on Piddledown Common, almost at the top of the north side of the Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK on 28 November 2012.

  • Processing — (a) 50% speed reduction, which means sounding an octave lower; (b) application of a cathedral acoustic with 'back of cathedral' perspective.

  • Primary distinguishing features — Yes, this is a really intense soundworld! The eastern European Gypsy scale the Gypsy chimes are tuned to has a disturbing melancholy sound at normal pitch, but here slowed-down and placed within a virtual back-of-cathedral type of acoustic, everything is transformed. The Gypsy Mezzo chimes now have an intense and visionary quality. The bamboo chimes in this environment sound as though they have human qualities, and are dramatically commentating on the proceedings.

Please note that high-grade headphones would give the best listening experience.
